In Mexico, cancer is the second leading cause of death among non-communicable diseases, following cardiovascular disease. Yet between 50% and 30% of deaths can be prevented through healthy lifestyles. Marginalized populations in particular have the lowest survival rates due to a lack of prevention policies, timely detection and access to treatment. More than 70% of cancer cases are diagnosed in advanced stages, which reduces the chances of being cured and increases treatment costs.

Yo quiero Yo puedo focuses on the prevention of risk factors such as tobacco, alcohol, obesity and sedentarism from an early age; as well as early detection of some types of cancer, especially in rural communities. Our strategy includes the development of life skills, such as self-awareness, decision making and assertive communication, aimed at changing risky behaviors and maintaining these changes. Health care and optimization of diagnostic and treatment service usage are strengthened by raising participants’ awareness of their rights.
