The project worked in the rural communities of Oaxaca's Valles Centrales region where women least frequently undertook Pap smears. Our workshops enabled the women to make informed decisons about their wellbeing and cervical cancer prevention specifically.
Project objectives
Work with female health promoters and local groups to conduct community-level needs assessments to design a cervical cancer education program that responds to the needs in rural Oaxaca.
Develop a replicable educational program that addresses local beliefs and attitudes related to cervical cancer in order to encourage utilization of early detection services.
Carry out educational workshops with health promoters from pilot communities, especially local female health promoters, so that women can receive education and encouragement for cervical cancer testing.
Establish a strategy to build long-term support for cervical cancer prevention initiatives in rural, underserved communities of Oaxaca State.
Disseminate diagnostic and evaluation results to health authorities in order to develop a project model that can be replicated and implemented at the state and national levels
